Susan Sarandon Joins Heavenly Cloud Atlas Cast

Sure, a leisurely life of ping-pong sounds appealing, but Susan Sarandon is opting instead to join the cast of the film adaptation of David Mitchell's much-praised Cloud Atlas.

Directors Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer arrived in Cannes today to announce their updated – and stepped up – cast list. It was also revealed at today's Cannes "Cloud" presentation that joining Sarandon is fellow Oscar winner Jim Broadbent. This comes on the heels of yesterday's news that Hugo Weaving and Ben Whishaw have also been cast. Weaving, no stranger to adaptations given his Lord of the Rings experience, previously worked with the Wachowskis on "The Matrix." Whishaw wowed us most recently in Jane Campion's "Bright Star," in which he played perfectly the role of poet John Keats. Tom Hanks and Halle Berry are also set to star in the film.

The novel is comprised of six storylines. The New York Times's Tom Bissell said of the book: "Cloud Atlas imposes a dizzying series of milieus, characters and conflicts upon us." Well, with a casting round-up like this, it seems like the movie's off to a great start at living up to that description.
