The first trailer for 'Killing Them Softly' has been released, and one thing is for certain: The bad-ass meter is off the charts. Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, and Richard Jenkins round out the all-star cast in Andrew Dominik's cinematic adaptation of Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins. In the trailer we are introduced to two dimwits (Scoot McNairy as Frankie and Ben Mendelsohn as Russell) who foolishly decide to rob a mob card game overseen by Ray Liotta. Cue Brad Pitt, who is brought in as a silent enforcer to track down the guys responsible for the heist.

Higgins is considered one of the grandfathers of American crime fiction, sharing the title with fan favorites such as Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Contemporary crime writers like Elmore Leonard have praised Higgins, asserting that his books make "The Maltese Falcon read like Nancy Drew.”

Check out the trailer, and leave your reaction in the comments. Do you think "Killing Them Softly" has the potential to be as intense and successful as last year's "Drive" with Ryan Gosling?
