Philip Seymour Hoffman Joins Noomi Rapace and Gary Oldman for 'Child 44'

We knew Tom Rob Smith's bestseller Child 44 would make a helluva movie; casting is barely underway and the project is already oozing with artistic cred. The latest word has Philip Seymour Hoffman joining a cast that already includes Noomi Rapace and Gary Oldman. Honestly, they had me at Oldman. The rest is just icing on a grim, grey, serial-killing cake!

Cormac McCarthy has had many of his novels adapted to the screen, but aside from a script back in the '70s (which was only produced for TV), we've never seen what an original McCarthy screenplay might look like. The new trailer for "The Counselor" shows promise, and the presence of Javier Bardem is always reassuring -- even if his characters tend to be the least reassuring people on earth. If you thought the human collateral damage in "Man of Steel" was a little over the top, then you'll get a kick out of this video game, which allows you to brawl as Superman with little concern for the welfare of the general populace. I suspect that in the sequel our hero's biggest showdown will be against insurance claim adjusters.

Even if you haven't seen "This is the End" (and really, what are you waiting for?), you have to admit that a film about the Rapture and accompanying apocalypse really doesn't lend itself to sequels -- except the Left Behind series, of course. Anyway, Evan Goldberg claims that a sequel to this summer's hit comedy isn't out of the realm of possibility, even if his co-director Seth Rogen is staunchly against it for now.
