Exclusive: Lauren Kate's Top 5 Surprises from the 'Fallen' Set

Editor's Note: Lauren Kate is the author of the Fallen series. Fallen tells the story of Luce Price, who is sent to Sword & Cross boarding school in Savannah, Georgia after being accused of a crime she didn't commit. The film adaptation, which is being directed by Scott Hicks ("Shine"), is readying for a 2015 release. "Fallen" stars Addison Timlin, Jeremy Irvine, Joely Richardson, Harrison Gilbertson, Lola Kirke, Sianoa Smit-McPhee, Daisy Head, and Juliet Aubrey. Here, Lauren offers her take on the five most surprising moments for an author on a movie set. You can follow Lauren on Twitter @LaurenKateBooks.

5. The scope of the project is massive. A huge camp of trailers greeted me when I pulled up to the Tura Castle, outside Budapest. I was surprised by the number of people working this movie. Around 200 cast and crew members have a job for months, partly because I sat down one day in a little farmhouse in Winters, CA, with the strange notion that an angel might fall in love with a mortal girl.

4. The casting is perfect. I expected to feel some rift between the characters in the novel and the actors portraying them. But when they all walked toward me for the first time, I let myself imagine they were angels and demons. That wouldn't have been possible if they hadn't been cast so well.

3. Actors can step into The Zone more quickly than writers. I require an hour of very focused window-staring before I can start writing, but I learned my first night on set how deft actors are at slipping in and out of character. I was having a conversation with Joely Richardson about a book we'd both adored when director Scott Hicks called her to set. Joely straightened her spine, tightened her expression, and Miss Sophia stalked away from me.

2. Scenes take unexpected directions. When I sit down to write a scene, I have a plan in mind, and I'm thrilled when a character disregards my goals and takes the story to a place I hadn't imagined. On set, I saw that Scott Hicks welcomes this experience, too. He told me about a scene in which he thought the camera's focus would be on Joely (Miss Sophia). After they'd shot the scene, he saw that Lola Kirke (Penn) was "emotionally peaking." Scott shouted, "Roll!" just in time to capture an essential tear sliding down Penn's cheek, never meant to be in the movie.

1. There's a moment in the movie that would be wonderful in the book. Readers beg me not to let the movie stray from the book. I assure them that everyone working on the film agrees. But there is one new moment in the film that is so economical and so moving, it would have worked beautifully if it were in the novel. I hope my fans will think of this added scene like one of the "extra" chapters that accompany the Fallen books. I can't wait for you to experience all of it on the big screen.

After looking at the cover pic I have to say I'm happy with the 'Lucinda' and 'Daniel' that have been picked. But am disappointed in 'Cam'. I'm sure he is a wonderful actor but the 'Cam' I imagined and I'm sure many other, seems much more stronger and give more of a mature presence.
Yes I get they are ment to be 17ish but that doesn't mean he can't be a man.
I guess it will be a matter of waiting and seeing what we get in screen to be the true test.
Well done Lauren and I hope you continue with the next chapter in true vision of what you saw.

    • Pixie

I always imagined him with lime green eyes and short choppy jet black hair πŸ™ not at all what I expected.. I expected what was written in the book and then my imagination took him to become this scene/punk/alternative looking guy.

  • Mina Poosz

OMG! I just can't wait for this movie! And I'm so pleased that you chose Jeremy Irvine to play Daniel and that you chose Addison Timlin as Lucinda, but am a bit disappointed on the Cam roll. He sure is a good actor, but I could had imagine something more "harsh". But thats just from looking at him. I'm so sure that everyne are going to love him, me too. Good Luck with the Movie πŸ˜€ I'm so excited!!

Lauren Kate has inspired me to write my self and I am now on page 97 of my written version. I am a really young writer and am hoping that one day Lauren herself will read my book and love it just as much as I love hers! Her new book Teardrop will hopefully have just as amazing success as the Fallen series! Ugh can't wait!

  • Rebecca

I have just finished reading the series myself yesterday (although I admit I had the books on my bookshelf for about 4 years now unread) - I congratulate you Lauren on a spectacular series and I didn't realize until just this past week I was in fact missing out on the books that sat unread on my bookshelf... I do however notice one minor issue with the still shown above - in the first book Lucinda's mother shaves her head due to the fire that singed most of her scalp, in the above still she has long hair - I do hope in keeping with tradition of the book as you mention in your article above that her hair is in fact short in the movie. I also hope this ends up continuing as I have seen one of my favorite book to movie adaptions already go from only 1 movie to nothing more even though there are 6 books to the Series... I find I get very upset when I find out they do not continue a movie adaption just because of ratings in the box office and I believe I speak for all when I say I do hope they continue to the end with this...

    • Steph

Definitely, I agree with this 100%

    • fallen4u

i hope they do not cut her hair bc she'd look sooooo much better with it long

  • Rhiannon

When does the movie trailer come out though? I'm curious and honestly dying with anticipation πŸ™‚

  • pumpkin

This will make a much better movie then it did book

OH MY GOD I CAN'T WAIT those books mean so much to me I actually started crying from excitement when I heard they'll make a movie from the series! Lauren Kate, you will forever be my hero! Can't wait for the trailer!

  • Arielle

If Leonardo D. Was much younger like he was in the titanic I feel like he would be perfect for Daniel Gregori... Imagining him saying Luce and just kissing her seems perfect. Gosh why did he have to get so old.. The movie could have been perfect with him in it

  • Ashley Davis

Loved the book and can't wait to see the movie

  • Kylee

Please please please please don't change it so much from the book I absolutely love how it goes on throughout the books, and I think if this movie is changed to much it will ruin it and this book one of my absolute favorite books besides Lauren kates second series of course!
