Though America’s Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat of tyranny, our country is, now more than ever, vulnerable to authoritarian tendencies. Democracy faces new threats everyday.
We can help to steer America’s future in the direction of facts, constructive discourse, and political harmony by educating ourselves on the history of other countries that fell to fascism, and by learning how they got there. We owe it to ourselves to learn from the past and fight for the years to come, because if we don’t, then who will? You don’t have to be on the front lines of a protest or lobbying in the halls of Congress in order to resist. Everyone can do their part in being vigilant against tyrannical forces by incorporating a few small but vital habits into their everyday lives, and by being thoughtful.
Moreover, we need to remember that it’s okay to disagree and stand alone from the crowd. Disagreement is necessary for growth and blind compliance is detrimental. All it takes is one person to start a movement towards a brighter future – will it be you?
How can you resist? Be present. When reading an article online (like this one) don’t take it at face value. Do you know who published it? Do you know who wrote it? What facts does the basis of the article depend upon? Can you confirm those facts? Truth is not a specter. As shown in the video above, if nothing is true, then no one can criticize power. And what’s America without a little constructive criticism?
